c1900 ZAUBERKASTEN SET
The oldest in the collection this is a German set known for its wood turned magic props. Amazingly I received this from Brazil. It was purchased for $400 and sold for $800. Contained in the set were a variety of odd items as well as magic standards seen in sets in one form or another for 50+ years thereafter. At he upper right of the set is one of the oddities (several trick worked similarly to the Ball and Vase and this was one of them) which separated in two spots, although I could not determine the effect Next to this is an Egg Vase of a sort although there was no base. In these an "egg" would transform itself into a small bird or a silk if you did not work with livestock. Next to this was a Ball and vase. Then came a Marble or Jam vase where a small clay marble would vanish and reappear via a different method than the Ball and Vase. A coin would vanish from the next trick via a slot at the bottom of the container. Instructions came next and a couple of paper items including what was later called a "Magic Window" wherein one of 4 cards was made to appear in a center window. Following this at the upper right was another cylinder that separated in two spots, one of the spots containing a paper flower. I assume this to be a flower growth type of effect. In the next row is an item still available today which was a dice shaker that produced a predicted total. Then a spring loaded awl where the spike retracted into the handle followed by two rings for ring on and off rope type effects. The next group contained another unidentified wood vase, Egg Cup, comedy funnel, Himber type cardboard wallet and coin producing box. At the left of the set, the large red circle was a multiplying cork effect that was popular into the 30s. The bottom row contained Grandmother's beads, Obedient Ball, Jumping Peg, Silk to Egg, another wood turned coin producing and vanishing box (yellow circle next to the dice which was Vanishing Dice Box with a cardboard box and die). The bottom row contained the Pillars of Thor (later variations became the Chinese Sticks, and the far right was a popular item at the time called the Finger Thru Hat. I saved one of my favorites for the end which was the Rod, Ball, and Ring effect in the bottom center. Later seen in the Sneaky Pete's Set (c1950s) in plastic the center, white ball (there is a duplicate) would penetrate off a black ball capped wooden rod followed by an examined ring which would penetrate onto the rod.
